Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: Mike Flack Message: Thanks for checking, Doug Perry. We're fine, took the high ground here 17 years ago, stayed high and dry ever since. A lot of people around here aren't so fortunate though. There are still people without water and some without electricity over a week after the main event. A lot of people who had no idea that they were in a flood zone found out the hard way. Eleven small dams in this immediate area failed and just washed people out. Over 100 roads are still closed and will be for months or more. I don't know how many bridges are gone. They're actually looking at the possibility of using AVLBs to replace those bridges on a temporary basis just to get to people who are stranded. Hard times for some. Thanks again for checking on us. |

Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: Willard Langdon Message: LTC(Ret) James (Jim) Waters passed away early this morning at his home. I called his home & spoke with his nurse yesterday about 5:00 pm. I gave her a message to give Jim, & while I was still on the phone, she told him that we all loved him and that we were all praying for him. He acknowledged with a nod of his head. She said he understood. It is my understanding that he will be buried in Arlington when arrangements can be made. Jim and I have spoken with each other several times a week for the last few years, and shared stories of our military careers. We were the best of friends. For those who are not familiar with LTC Waters, he entered the military as an enlisted man, rose to the rank of SSG E-6, was wounded in Vietnam, went to OCS, and became an officer, and had a distinguished career as a Ranger officer. He was working in the Pentagon when the plane crashed into the building on 9-11-2001. Jim was the kind of person that if you asked him to carry your bag for a mile, he would carry it for two. Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: Joe Mattison Message: An interesting "foot note" about two of the SGMs. SGM Fletcher was at CFM and SGM Miller was in Fla. After "one year" on station in each, the "swapped" and Fletcher went to Fla, and Miller came to CFM. They each needed to complete 1 year on station in order to have the Army pay for moving the household goods. |
